Synopsis
Set in a seven acre valley on the edge of Hay on Wye, Lower House has a fine garden created by Peter Daw and his late wife Nicky, shot through with a strong sense of design. In the marvellous topiary garden a standard Portuguese laurel is surrounded by a sea of box clipped into myriad shapes including 'stacked pebbles', as well as a pair of variegated hollies and voluptuous spires of yew. Elsewhere naturalised Fritillaria meleagris, snakeshead fritillaries, have self seeded throughout the garden, decorating the ground below deciduous trees that are just stirring into life, a magnolia covered with fat buds, and the wedding cake tree, Cornus controversa 'Variegata' luminous with fresh leaves. Lots of nice design details in a beautiful rural setting.
