Synopsis
In recent years Bishop Peter Price instigated the creation of the Garden of Reflection, a contemporary space containing a 3m high poustinia, a simple spiral enclosure designed for contemplation, surrounded by a flowery meadow of white stemmed birches, studded in spring by pheasant's eye narcissus and deep crimson tulips. Head Gardener James Cross and his team have regenerated the garden over the past decade with a programme of replanting. In the formal East Garden, Euonymus 'Green Spire' is used as an alternative to box hedging and frame sharply clipped yews and the bright spikes of Libertia 'Goldfinger'. There are ancient trees too, plus areas of moisture loving plants and a winter walk where a colourful mix of evergreens and deciduous shrubs including dogwoods and Edgworthia chrysantha 'Red Dragon' show just how interesting the winter garden can be. Lots of contemporary planting in a place that oozes history through every pore; a great combination.
