Synopsis
Regarded by many as Kyoto's foremost Zen temple, Nanzen-ji consists of a number of smaller courtyard garden that support its main landscape . The main raked gravel garden was named "Toranoko-watashi (translated as "young tigers crossing the water". This latter large area of raked gravel also has a number of carefully selected rocks, moss and trees at the rear of the plan raked gravel. The garden is said to have been designed by landscpae architect Kobori Enshu in around 1600. The garden is a designated place of scenic beauty.
