Ryoani-Ji Temple and Landscape Garden

A Zen buddhist monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this is probably the worlds best known Dry Landscape garden or Karesansui. Lesser known is the surrounding landscaped garden which is at its best in the Autumn.

Synopsis
Although the garden's original designer is unclear, it is believed to have been created in the C15th and received its current design in the Edo period. The Rock Garden consists of carefully arranged rocks and gravel in an 25m x 10m rectangle enclosed by clay walls Their unusual appearance is from the clay being boiled with oil when they were constructed. Fifteen stones are placed in groups surrounded by white gravel which is raked daily by the monks. The pond was made in the C12th where an island houses a Buddhist shrine.
